It's the last month of merry, it's Christmas and if your wallet could talk, it would probably scream, “Leave me alone, jare!” But here’s the thing: Christmas doesn’t care about bank balances before infecting you with its infectious merry.
We have termed the current harsh economic situation, T-pain . I prefer not to speak on how the name came to light but I feel it perfectly describes how everyone is feeling right now in terms of inflation and the harsh economic situations in Nigeria.
Pain.
Whether you’re balling or broke, the festive season must be celebrated! After all, We Nigerians don’t back down—we must make it happen. We always love to jolly. Someone might exclaim, in this economy?
Well, Yes!
I know The Grinch has taken over our wallets. But as Nigerians, we no dey carry last, Who says Christmas is only for when there's money? Let me tell you how you can celebrate a T-pain Christmas this year on a budget, whether you’re spending naira notes or borrowing vibes from the next person. ππ
Jesus Was Born in a Manger, Not a Mansion
First things first, Christmas is about Jesus' birthday, not yours. He didn’t do too much at birth—just some swaddling clothes and a crib made of straw. So sis, leave that Xmas PJs or that Christmas tree you can't afford. if your bank account balance looks like your airtime balance after data subscription, don’t stress. Christmas Is in the Heart, Not in the Pocket. Do you think the shepherds who saw baby Jesus stopped to check their savings? No! They just showed up. You, too, can show up for Christmas with your full chest. Don’t let your account balance rob you of the joy of the season. Trust me, it’s the thought that counts! DIY and Decorate one plastic tree and set it up in your living room, put up the blinking lights and some Xmas music on and celebrate like a VIP. After all, Jesus understands humble beginnings. Besides, you can always say you’re keeping it minimalist—trendy, no?
There's Magic in Christmas Rice
Let’s talk about the real MVP of Christmas— Christmas Rice. No matter the amount of rice you eat during the year ,no matter how tight the T-pain period is, rice must show face on the 25th. Who says you need millions to cook Christmas rice? Even if it’s just one cup of rice, tomatoes, and pepper from Mama Ngozi’s shop in your street, you’re good to go. Throw in a little seasoning and that smoky flavor that comes from firewood, and boom—you’ve created magic. Your neighbors will ask if you hired a five-star chef. Bonus points you can serve it with fried chicken or fried egg; no judgment here. Or Another option is, must you even cook rice? There are other foods that you can eat in this festive period, stick to what you can afford! You can just arrange one stir fry spaghetti and boiled egg, its perfect! And don’t forget to share—because Christmas without sharing is like your birthday party with just you in attendance, BORING!
The Christmas Spirit Is Free
Have you noticed that in the month of December, there's always something in the air, the aura, people suddenly become cheerful? You don't need money to feel it. The vibe is just there and it's unmatched. Sit around with family, crack jokes about the year’s struggles, and laugh until your stomach hurts. Laughter is free, and in this economy, free things are the ultimate blessing. Whether you have money or not, whether you are traveling back home or not, sing carols at the top of your lungs, wear Santa hats, and dance to “Mary’s boy child…”, shoot fireworks or low budget banger in your compound. The spirit of Christmas doesn’t check your wallet before entering your home.
Fashion Is All About Confidence
You see eh, Nigerians have this habit of turning everything into a competition. “Who wore the best clothes?”, “Whose house has the fanciest lights?” Social media pressure to impress. Forget all that! Christmas isn’t about who's serving looks or who did it better. It’s about creating memories with loved ones after a whole ass year. Can't afford the latest trendy wear? Fear not! Rock your last year’s outfit, or an outfit you bought during the year, put on a pretty hairdo. Nobody will know, How will they know?? Then top it up with steeze when you get to that Christmas gathering and you will distract everyone from checking whether your shoes, bags or cloth is Okrika or designers.π
Community Over Currency
Let’s not forget the essence of Christmas: family, love, and laughter. Get together, be outside with people, friends and Loved ones. I know some of you like to travel home, especially the easterners and travelling to the village, 5&6 . So if you can't travel, use your money enjoy wherever you are, buy airtime and data, call, reminiscing about old Christmas holidays. This Christmas must happen. We’ll laugh, eat, dance, and celebrate, because, at the end of the day, Christmas is about joy ,gratitude and celebrating life no matter what our currency is saying.
DIY Christmas Gifts = Big Love
No money for expensive gifts or hamper packages? No problem get creative and—DIY! Create some homecraft, Bake some chin chin, share your meal, write heartfelt notes, or even create playlists for your loved ones, Send a heart felt voice message, a Christmas video. Nothing says “I love you” like a customized gift made with good intentions and Christmas Vibes, this is 2024, you can get ideas all over the place, Pinterest or wherever or even a heart felt simple Merry Christmas my beloved. You might not spend much, but the gesture will warm hearts and screem, Love.
Nigerians Always Find a Way
Let’s face it, if there’s one thing Nigerians are known for, it’s finding joy in chaos. Whether you’re in the village, the city, the Christmas spirit is unstoppable. if there’s one thing we know, it’s that Nigerians are resilient. So whether your bank alerts are shouting in joy or whispering in T-pain, Christmas must happen. The Agenda must Agend. We’ll laugh, eat, dance, and celebrate, because, at the end of the day, Christmas is about joy and gratitude—not bank account sizes. celebrate like the millionaire you will be someday. No excuses!
Have a heart filled with Gratitude
Despite the bad economy, we’ve made it to the end of another year alive, WE MADE IT! that's a whole lot. That alone is worth celebrating! Christmas is a reminder that joy can still be found in the simplest things—a roof over your head, a plate of food, and the company of loved ones. It’s not about what you don’t have but appreciating what you do have, life. Go and Thank the Lord. Be happy that you made it to the end of the year. You are a survivor, so act like it!
Because It’s Christmas, Duh!
At the end of the day, Christmas is Christmas, so Why Not ? Whether you’re eating rice or garri, wearing designer or second-hand, the season is about hope, love, and joy. And as Nigerians, we know how to create magic out of nothing. We survive, that what we do.
So, my dear, celebrate boldly whether you’re spending millions or managing coins, remember: Christmas is a time to celebrate life, love, and the little blessings. And if all else fails, fake it till you make it—money or no money. Dance, laugh, eat, go out, have fun and spread good vibes. After all, no condition is permanent, And there's a better Christmas to come right? So don't dull.
